If you’re getting ready for an Alaska cruise, packing can feel a little intimidating. The weather can change quickly, wildlife sightings are unpredictable, and you want to be comfortable without overpacking.

After cruising to Alaska in October and experiencing it firsthand, I picked up a few packing lessons that made a big difference. You can also check out my YouTube videos from that trip for a closer look at what Alaska cruising is really like.

Here are five essentials to pack for an Alaska cruise that will help you enjoy the experience without stress.

1. Binoculars

Alaska is known for incredible wildlife and dramatic scenery. Whales breaching, glaciers calving, eagles soaring - and sometimes all of it happens when you least expect it.

Bringing binoculars allows you to see wildlife and glaciers up close, even from your balcony or the ship’s deck. They’re especially helpful on scenic cruising days when the ship slows down near glaciers.

2. Rain Jacket

A rain jacket is a must for an Alaska cruise, especially during the summer months when rain is more common. Even outside of peak rainy season, weather can change quickly.

Choose a rain jacket that offers some warmth, since Alaska temperatures can feel like a yo-yo throughout the day. A good rain jacket keeps you dry and helps block wind, making shore excursions much more comfortable.

3. Waterproof Shoes

Wet feet can ruin an otherwise great day. Between rain, puddles, and excursions, waterproof shoes are one of the most practical things you can pack.

If you don’t want to buy new shoes, consider waterproofing your current pair with a spray or using waterproof shoe covers. Comfort and dryness matter more than style in Alaska.

4. Power Bank

You’ll want your phone or camera ready at all times in Alaska. Wildlife sightings don’t wait, and neither do glacier views.

A power bank ensures you don’t miss capturing the beauty around you. Just remember to pack it in your carry-on, not checked luggage, and confirm it’s under 100Wh to meet airline safety requirements.

5. Layers

Alaska weather is all about layers. One moment you’re warm, the next you’re reaching for a jacket.

Pack a mix of:

  • Long and short sleeves

  • Jeans and lighter pants

  • Rain gear

  • Warmer outer layers

Many cruise lines offer laundry specials onboard, which can give you peace of mind if you’re worried about packing enough clothing.

Packing smart makes a huge difference on an Alaska cruise. When you’re comfortable, dry, and prepared, it’s easier to relax and enjoy the scenery, wildlife, and once-in-a-lifetime moments.

If you’ve cruised Alaska before, what’s one item you’d never forget to pack next time?
